These vintage textiles were originally used by the Hmong tribes in celebrations, as skirts and baby carriers. The Hmong hilltribes of Thailand, Laos and China have long been revered for their intricate textiles. The patterns and techniques vary by region and tribe but include batik, indigo, embroidery, appliqué and frequently a combination of multiple techniques in bright, contrasting colors.
Hmong embroidery has evolved over time to include Lao, Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Western influences and has come to incorporate a variety of materials, textiles and techniques. The bright, pop colors of these pillows reflect the melding of traditional Hmong textile design with the bright color palette that was trending in the 70s and 80s when these fabrics were made.
